How to Fibreglass a Roof in Warwickshire: A Step-by-Step Guide

Fibreglass roofing, also known as GRP (Glass Reinforced Polyester) roofing, is a popular choice for flat roofs in Warwickshire due to its durability and water-resistant properties. At A1 Roofing Coventry, we have years of experience in fibreglass roofing and are happy to share our expertise with you. Here's a step-by-step guide on how to fibreglass a roof in Warwickshire:

Preparation

Before starting the fibreglassing process, ensure the roof is clean, dry, and free of debris. Remove any existing roofing materials, such as felt or asphalt, and inspect the roof for any damage or rot. Make any necessary repairs before proceeding.

Laying the Mat

Apply a layer of GRP mat to the roof, ensuring it is evenly spread and smooth. The mat should be 450g/m² or heavier, depending on the specific requirements of your roof. Use a roller to remove any air bubbles and ensure the mat is securely attached to the roof.

Applying the Resin

Mix the GRP resin according to the manufacturer's instructions and apply it to the mat using a roller or brush. Ensure the resin is evenly spread and covers the entire surface of the mat. The recommended thickness of the resin is 1-2 mm.

Laminating the Roof

Allow the resin to cure for the recommended time, usually 30 minutes to an hour, before applying a second layer of mat and resin. This process is called laminating, and it helps to create a strong and durable bond between the mat and the resin.

Applying the Topcoat

Once the laminating process is complete, apply a topcoat of GRP resin to the roof. This helps to protect the roof from the elements and provides a smooth, glossy finish.

Trimming the Edges

Use a trimmer or a sharp knife to trim the edges of the fibreglass roof, ensuring a neat and tidy finish. Pay particular attention to corners and edges, where water may collect.

Finishing Touches

Inspect the roof to ensure it is smooth, even, and free of defects. Apply a final coat of topcoat if necessary, and allow it to cure before exposing the roof to the elements.
